Social Engineering – Beginner Level: Understand the Human Threat

Email phishing is one of the most common and dangerous forms of social engineering. It involves sending fake emails that appear to come from trusted sources (like your bank, employer, or a colleague) to trick you into clicking malicious links, downloading harmful attachments, or giving away sensitive information like passwords, credit card numbers, or login credentials.

Common Signs of a Phishing Email

  • Urgent or threatening language (e.g. “Your account will be closed!”)

  • Unfamiliar or slightly misspelled email addresses

  • Unexpected attachments or links

  • Generic greetings like “Dear Customer” instead of your name

  • Requests for sensitive information

How to Protect Yourself

  • Always check the sender’s email address carefully

  • Hover over links before clicking to preview where they lead

  • Never download attachments from unknown senders

  • Report suspicious emails to your IT/security team

  • Use spam filters and antivirus software
